Last year, there was a lot of hype in social media about the traditional Ayurvedic remedy known as oil pulling. Many articles noted the health benefits of the ancient practice like detoxification, teeth whitening, headache relief and, of course, its aid in oral hygiene.
I imagine that when people started to read a little more about the practice they came across the same articles I did when I questioned the practice.”…oil pulling therapy has insufficient peer-reviewed scientific studies to support its use for oral conditions” (American Dental Association)
Reading that made me re-think doing this experiment but I am going to push forward anyway. Why am I giving it a shot? Well, I want to try it out from another perspective. My thoughts after doing a bit of research and reading articles and studies for, and against, the practice is that there may very well be a meditative aspect to oil pulling that can explain the home remedy claims. I will practice this technique, once a day for one month to see what the results are physically, mentally and even spiritually.
The pic above shows what my teeth look like after one session of oil pulling. It is important to note the following:
1. my teeth were flossed beforehand
2. pulled oil through my teeth for 15 minutes
3. I do not eat meat
4. I am not a cigarette smoker
5. yes, lipstick is worn in the pic because I don’t like my natural lip colour – side note: for consistency, I will be wearing this shade in my weekly pics until the end of my 1 month review
